Tuesday Edit: Fall 2016 Trends

Fall is just around the corner, which not only means a shift in weather patterns, but a transition into fall fashion as well. From outerwear to sweaters and jeans, there are some pieces that are staples of autumn, but that doesn’t mean these standards can’t receive a bit of a makeover to celebrate the new season. Transition your wardrobe into the fall season with these updated classics that are perfect for adding that eye-catching final touch to your cool-weather ensemble. The Leopard Print Coat The fall’s lineup features no shortage of outerwear, but the standout among them is by far the leopard print coat. Swap out your camel-colored trenches and neutral black pea coats for ones that feature the fierce print instead. The vivid print, when combined with a classic silhouette, makes for a sophisticated, chic, and seasonless piece that you can wear year after year, with anything and everything — after all, as Harper’s Bazaar points out, as far as the fashion world is concerned, leopard is a neutral.

The Statement Fur Whether in a mid-length coat, cropped jacket, or trimmed accent, fur is a must-have for fall. But this season the essential material features a bit of a twist. As WWD puts it, these are not your grandma’s pelts, in tasteful black or brown. Instead, designers worked in a rainbow array of hues, from pastel pink to cobalt blue — sometimes even combining several into a single coat with creative patching and patterning. Opt for a bright color or fun pattern to bring a bit of vibrancy to the season, or choose a near-neutral like blush, navy, or pale yellow for a more subtle take on the trend.

The Punchy Power Suit If the term ‘power suit’ conjures up images of shoulder pads and a baggy-at-best fit, you’re not alone. But, it may be time to give the menswear-inspired trend another try, now that it’s (thankfully) moved into the twenty-first century. According to Style Caster, fashion wasn’t shy about updating the dowdy pantsuit for fall, giving it a bold, feminine, and decidedly un-frumpy upgrade. Slim, stylish, and often colorful, fall’s matching separates are just as suited for a night out as they are for the boardroom. The Split Front Skinny Jean Versatile, figure-flattering, and always in style, it’s no wonder why the skinny jean has become a fashion classic. As Lyst writes, not only is the classic skinny jean ideal for working a streamlined silhouette, it also pairs well with virtually everything in our closets, making it a go-to for any occasion. To give this staple a bit of an upgrade for the fall season, designers are infusing the skinny jean with unexpected details, such as a split front. Choose a pair that hits just at the ankle and finish with an equally noticeable flat — such as the season’s slipper slide or flat mule — to make the most of the trend.
